Latin was in some ways useful to me as I guess it helped me gain more historical knowledge and understanding of European languages.

English (American [with the sub-dialects of north-eastern, Rhode Island, southern, western, southern California (my home), Hawaiian-English, techno babble, law, medical, scientific, and druggie] and British)
In fact I prefer British English to American English, which has actually hurt me at work. Most of the following examples don't relate perfectly, however they are all words i see in British usage not American. I spent all hours working on a SSH server config because i had spelled the word authorised (which passes my spell checkers) not authorized. Or my infamous fight with my (now ex) boss that disused, vitriolic, and defenestration were all English words. beyond that i know passing pieces of (in order of comfort): Latin, Spanish (Mexican and real), German, French, Italian, Japanese. I often quote one of my goals in life is knowing 2 words in 12 languages, I am working on it slowly. As far as Latin being useless I call BS, I know more about every romantic language from 6 months of assisted self study of Latin that I have learned from 4 years of high school Spanish and a French girlfriend combined. And that is without the mental flexibility it gave me when approaching new law, medical, and scientific words. A passing knowledge of select Greek roots (I would kill to learn Greek properly) and my little bit of Latin study are 2 of my biggest tools for dealing with any language barrier. |

I rencently decided that I like to do Irish. I was over in Spain with my father, brother, my father's girlfriend and her son(who are both litheuanian.... if that's how its spelled). my father's girlfriend and her son kept speaking to eachother in their own language and my and my younger brother would have none of it!
So.... we started speaking in Irish.... "D'ith mé mo mhadra inné!"

I know English, and I have a decent grasp of Irish, I too would like to learn Latin as I think it would be very helpful in understanding new words if you can understand the root of the words. I have done 2 years of French so far in school but can't say much more than Je m'appelle Irish_Sniper . If you really want to test out your English vocabulary check out Free Rice.com. Its a real novel idea and for a good cause too. |

I'm fluent in Norwegian and English, but also understand most of the other nordic languages such as Sweedish and Danish (mainly because they sound almost the same, and because Norway through history has been invaded and in union with both Sweeden and Denmark). I'm also pretty ok in French, understand a bit of the language they speak in the Faroe Islands and on Iceland and know a few words in Russian.
Would love to learn Irish though, sounds like a beautiful language.
