As for nitrate flashpowder´s, I recommend BaNO3/Al in a 75/25 ratio, it produces a very bassy boom and burns very fast and bright unconfined.
I got my BaNO3 from filtered sparklers, the filtrate was cooled to 0° and all the BaNO3 crystals were washed.

Then I grind them till airfloat and mixed the BaNO3 with german dark Aluminium.
This flashpowder is very good compared to KNO3/Al.

Actually, sulfur is a welcome addition for a report composition in this scenario, as slow flash powders rely more upon gas production than heat expansion.

Your best formula would be something like 6.5 barium nitrate, 2.0 aluminum, and 1.5 sulfur, or just 6/2/2 if you can't weight by one tenth of a gram.
