A question about Xylitol Pentanitrate

I've been doing a bit of research on xylitol pentanitrate lately. For those who aren't sure what it is, it seems to be a rather unheard of explosive. I can't find too much on it online. It's an explosive polyol, made by a simple nitration, but I'm between two minds on what to expect.
After the nitration/filteration, what form is it? I've heard a goo, and a crystaline solid.
Also, has anyone else here tried this out explosive? Nme, I think you said you were planning on doing it, any luck?

Gooey or sticky XPN simply means that one had an incomplete reaction. Pure XPN should be a crystalline solid. Contamination with the tetra, tri, di, and mononitrate may cause it to be liquidy.

I would imagine that XPN would not require a complex reaction to make.... It's just another nitric esterification reaction. It could probably be done easily with NH4NO3, H2SO4, and of course 1,2,3,4,5-Pentahydroxypentane.

The goo could also mean impure all around. If you obtain goo, dissolve it in methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, or acetone (or anything fully miscible in water) then precipitate it with water. The reason it's unheard of is because nitrosugars (incl sugar alcohols) aren't that impressive. They're more or less novelties, which I suppose most explosives are to us. Regardless, please post any successes or failures as I always like hearing new things. Also, it would be nice if you could do some sort of comparative test, for example use a set weight (say 10g) and detonate it on a metal plate, then do 10g of another explosive such as picric acid or NG, whatever you fancy on a separate but similar metal plate, and compare the damage/dent. Axt commonly uses this method.

Not all sugar alcohol nitric esters are just novelties... Nitroglycerin and ETN for example...

Well I was hoping you would assume I meant higher sugar alcohols, or higher sugars. Perhaps it's just my bias against most basic nitration derived explosives. The only nitric esters I enjoy personally are nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose and ETN. Everything else I can take it or leave it. I don't know why, I just don't find them as interesting as perhaps a nitramine, or nitrosamines, or especially furazans.

Ok, I'll go the recrystalization route then. I have a good bit to experiment with, I found 250g for 4 euro in a health shop close by.
Yeah, I'll work at a comparative detonation. I'll see about a basic drop rig.. Odds are it'll be a little while before I do this, as I'm low on sulphuric acid and I'm verrry lazy. However, it's coming to that time of year again! Halloween in the upcoming weeks.. That'll be fun.
Anyway, back on track. Bohrium, yeah, it's just a simple nitration.
I'll post my synthesis notes and pics when I get around to doing this.. I've been out of action with regards to pyro for a while now, it's time to get back into it!
