Hacking..?

So anyways, I know quite a bit about computers, both the hardware and software side. I am extremely familiar with linux, windows, and solaris.

However, one thing that has been bugging me: Is hacking really this easy?
To me, hacking, is the same damn thing every time (correct me if I'm wrong), you scan the ports, find an open port, scan to see what services are open on that port, OS-detection, find and run an exploit. Not in that order but yeah, you get the point.

I've found exploits in smaller-time programs, really nothing entertaining there.

The only thing that I've found to be a mind-game like hacking is reputed to be is SQL injection, that shit is fun : ).

Of course there is always the basic gain upload rules and upload a trojan (Homemade or otherwise) to the startup directory.

Anyways my question really is, is there something I'm missing? This seems so..simple.

I don't know if it counts as hacking if it is not your own exploit however I suppose hacking is not necessarily doing something with your computer as it is being of a certain frame of mind, A perspective or an ability to question others.

As s25 pointed out, there are so many things that can be hacked. Computers is the one people think of, but there are so many things that are computers in disguise these days. Phones, tills, photocopiers, even cameras. As for computers yes, it can be that basic.

Well the shared network resources for the phone, printer, etc, generally just makes it easier, provided you can improvise some code.

Social engineering is always quite the fun venue. What's everyone else's favored method of attack? "Hacking" spawns quite a curiosity within me, especially SQL injection (as I've stated). Outsmarting sysadmins is like a little bit more complicated version of chess.

Now that I think about it this thread was kind of pointless.
