Hacking is definitely what you describe it as yourself. Programmers can be hacking at code to try and get it to work.. We have the basic stereotype of hackers breaking into computers. Hackers can also be people trying to do things unconventionally!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_culture That wikipedia link has a few definitions on it, give it a look. It's a very ambiguous word though, so we need something general, but people can still relate website hacks, virii, work-arounds, etc, to the term "hacking".
