a HUGE reason more security advisories are given for the linux os is because it is open source giving security professionals everything they need to discover and patch vulnerabilities. Only microsoft can correctly patch microsoft vulnerabilities but with open source anyone can create a patch because they know where the flaw is. Make windows opensource and you will be getting bugtraq mailing list messages by the minute.

Another advantage to Linux being open source is allowing the owner to edit the source cusomizing it in any way they see fit. Hell you can even create your own distro (try .www.linuxfromscratch.org).

Of course if you are not attracted to linux because of its free compilers/opensource features one might run it for its stability. Stability on unix's is well known with bsd boxes known to stay running without a reboot for years, I am sure about the same could be said for linux

The security of linux is there. You just have to know how to make it secure. Out of the box, most distros were not made for those who aren't familiar with configurations on unix. Check setuid's regularly. Run an md5 checksum verifyers. Only run what you need running, limit remote logins to regular users and use your sudoers list/iptables to your advantage.

I think the beauty of unix is running into those problems, having to fix them on your own and in doing so, gaining a greater knowledge of unix and how computers work at the same time.

I like Linux better primarily just because it's different and new. I was tired of Winblows fucking me over and crashing. So I switched and haven't had much problems..

I tried BSD from a live cd (Freesbie) and I didn't much care for it. I couldn't configure it to my monitor size and what not it was quite annoying. Everything was really big and I couldn't change it. Also there is nothing like ndiswrapper for BSD so I couldn't get internet working either.

Opensource in the size of the *nix systems will allways be better then priavte, as their are better well tested though as far as software going private made and sold OS'es will have beeter software as most people are out for the buck.
