But for everything else, Linux fails. Can I run my many PIC Program editors on Linux, nopes, will I easily find the drivers for my WiFi, my Bluetooth, and my USB to serial port? Again nopes. The only program that I use, which'll have no problem is GIMP, and that was designed for linux, and then ported to windows.

To have linux box, you need a windows box as far as I'm concerned.

I'm rebuilding my old PC, probably switch my 40gig HDD to linux, use the 80 gig as a windows build, probably windows media center.

Open source is great, becasue everyone can see the flaws, so instead of having an error checking team of 4 you have an error checking team of 400, however not all will be professionals. Is OSS the future, hopefully, but will it BE the future, no. Large corporations will do their best to stifle it, Windows, Mac, and suprisingly Google.

Why Google, look at your GMail account, still in beta, and guess what most beta tests are free, SketchUp, beta too, and free, once Google's got you hooked, ooh $5 a month to gain access to your 2gig GMail account please. Same with their office apps. There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, aka TNSTAAFL.

As far as stabilty is concerned, with my last windows install the only problems I've had are the fact the windows defrag is being odd, and everytime I use iTunes my pc lags like a cunt. Stability wise, it's good enough.

Alright fallen I'll give you that Linux isn't that userfriendly for some things but let me say this can you touch your ` key and have your console be brought down, can you customize windows as if it was open source? IS WINDOWS FREE?! No, yes I did the same that you did I have a 200 Gig Box I have 150 Gigs for my Windows and 40 for my Linux because everything is so compressed but if you look at the new Sabian.. And Slackware, ect ect, So much better then the other Distributions. Such as Debian [ :P Even though I'm running Debian as we speak.]

Not that I'm in any way knowledgeable about Linux, but aren't there a few builds that are nigh on idiot proof? Granted linux gives you a massive oppertunity for customisation, but in almost every screen shot of an OS the interface is pretty much identical to windows. There are subtle differences, but nothing that couldn't be done with WindowsBlinds or themes.

As far as cost, I'm a pirate, so that doesn't worry me, sure I've had fucked up versions, but that's part and parcel of pirated software, so it doesn't bother me.

I can't write programming code, aside from PICs, to save my life. I couldn't write alterations into a OSS at ALL.

Oh and having a console, meh, I wouldn't use it anyways.

For me windows is good, linux is nothing more than an intresting option. Granted that for many people linux is a much better option, e.g. businesses, servers, and other people. There is no perfect OS.

I have toadmit, my main issues atm are the bloating of the software, old iTunes v6 took very little system resources, now with 7, it's a whore, and my pc fucking hates it. And I get very little extra. Same with Windows, be nice in MS made it about 500MB before you have to use Bart's PE builder to reduce it down.

There are certainly some idiot-proof Linux distros out there, but it's a bit hard to define, for example, what would you consider idiot-proof?

When I open my file manager as root (the superuser, administrator, etc.) a red bar at the top of the window reminds me that I'm root and I could damage my system if I'm not careful. M$ has few such warnings, because most people are always the administrator. Someone could come into your room while you're in the toilet and format your HD, just like that, no real questions asked. Not so with Linux, it'd be "Give us the root password, so, you chancer.".
