Another tip to add to Syrus' is that you should never focus on the object you're trying to view while in the dark. Look directly beside it, as close as you can without looking at it. You will be able to see it much, much better.

Say, good idea Beyond.  Actually is :O I really get what you mean... Ever try looking at a specific star or nebula? If it's very faint you won't be able to see it unless you look away.

Hey this is pretty cool, I found it when i was looking at night vision.

That's pretty cool! Well, on the topic of something smaller, you could rig it to a camera, but it would only be able to take frames.. The link above seems to be the best/cheapers/most practical way of doing this
