Default garage door hack?

http://www.householdhacker.com/?p=30

As a lot of people, I have most of these items. Is this feasible? it seems logical, almost too logical if you know what I mean.

if this is a hoax, is there anyway to make such a device?

They probably don't have PC software on them, hes probably just changing the radio frequencies emitted using software on the laptop. Most garage door openers don't have any sort of restriction to attempts made to open them, i.e. allow only 1 attempt per minute, hour, etc.

More than likely, and I say this just by viewing, it's brute forcing the garage door. Garage doors don't have a wide scale of frequencies and are regulated by the FCC. You can view an FCC notification about garage door openers here to prove this. Given that, it wouldn't be hard to brute force by just alternating the frequencies and trying, i.e. If fail, move on; If pass, end.

It reminds me of a special on DateLine NBC a few years back where a guy went to Home Depot and bought all of the Universal Garage Door openers, about 4-5, and went down a neighborhood street opening all the doors. He told the home owners and they were pretty alarmed.

In sum, put high security locks on the doors that lead into the garage, not the garage doors themselves. Garage doors are terrible forms of security and can easily be knocked off track with a few people running into one.
