Im using vista on my the same desktop I used Xp on. I am running a 4 year old 2.8 GHz P4 and 1.5Gb of ram and I have no issues what so ever. I dont game or anything, but I use high end video editing software extensively and I still havent seen vista bog down anywhere that Xp didnt.

Bottom of the line, if you want your computer to have special effects but run blazingly fast, get the new ubuntu..

The reason for that is Ubuntu and most Linux distro's are aimed at older PCs so they need to take best advantage of the resources provided.

My first C had 64Mb of ram. Now it's a basic need to have around 2048Mb of ram. Vista is a resource hog by our standards, but think about it say 7 years down the line... The top end PC's in 2000 had about 512Mb to 1024Mb. so it's doubled or quadrupled, so Vista will be all spritey around the 4096Mb or 8192Mb?

And with memory as cheap as it is today, along with motherboards, it's not out the question to update hardware to meet that point. You can get a GB of great RAM for around $43.99 on NewEgg.com. I just bought 2 GB's of one of the fastest out there, Corsairs XM2, for $109.99. Tough to beat PC8500 at 4-4-4-12 timings.

Thing is most motherboards re on DDR2 (DDR3 is just WAY too expensive) and most will only take up to 4Gb. I've also been hearing grumblings that even Vista won't use any RAM beyond about 3000mb-ish. Details are here.

Problem is, Vista isn't 54 bit, and most software, read as all, is 32 bit.

You mean 64 bit right? My buddy is a gamer, and he is running 64 bit vista with 4gb of ram (I saw the secs under "my computers" properties), along with two SLI'd geforce 8800 GTX's and some overclocked AMD server processor... You should see how it handles crysis
