It’s a matter of personal preference for some, both will get the job done.
Being I own both the AR15 and AK47 and know them both inside and out, in a life or death situation I would undoubtedly grab my AR15 over my AK any day of the week, for one the AR15 is much more accurate then the AK47, it is more adaptable to any given situation/mission being upper receivers can be changed/switched out in a matter of seconds from a close quarters 14.5-16" bbl set-up to a 20" long/intermediate range sniper rig, the modifications that can be adapted by the AR15/M16 family of weapons is endless and that is why they are used by the US military and governments all around the world. Hope this helps. Dynasty

It's more of an AR15 vs AK47, not AK74 and above types. The AK74 -> AK101 are excellent, continuing hte ak47's reliability, and robustness, but into the 5.43mm calibre.

I though the AR was pretty little thing alrite. Had a nice hand grip, but was a bit heavy (yes even though the AK47 weighs more... lol.)Well it could have just been the configuration of the AR15 i held. I wonder what it would be like to shoot though..

It's not really going to matter whether you kill or wound your intruder. A 5.56mm wound is quite something. The reason it's designed to wound is that an injured soldier will have to be carried back to base, hence taking 3 soldiers out of the fight, not to give him a second chance to keep fighting. Discussing which rifle is more effective in a civilian, self-defense type scenario is like discussing which disease you'd rather have, AIDS or rabies.
None the less, the AK47 is an old rifle. I wouldn't go for it. Reliability isn't going to make any difference if you're keeping it under your bed. Not exactly harsh terrain. I hear the accuracy isn't great either, which will suck if you're taking it out hunting/shooting, and 7.62mm ammunition is needlessly more expensive. Although then again, the AK looks better...... But if you're going for looks the Styer takes the biscuit. I've held one of them. Good times.
