I generally just carry a kubaton on a key ring with me:
  • Gouge
  • Bludgeon
  • Choke
  • Add leverage to locks and holds
  • Pressure points
  • Flail with keys on the end

And if the police ask - it's just a key fob

Always keep it on a carabina so then if I do run into any trouble, I can quickly remove it from the keyring for disposal.

There's a kind of electrical cable (about an inch/2cm thick) which is often lying around if you've had builders in, etc.. It's coated in tough black plastic. Half a metre of it works as a whip or can strangle someone, depending on how rigid it is it can be just a club. Perfectly legal to keep some in your car or bedroom, and you don't need much of it. Very painful, I would imagine. Makes a great whistling sound as it parts the air. I have about a metre of it in the shed at home, along with some other not-quite-weapons stashed about!

If you fancy yourself a bit of a martial arts type, buy a wooden broom handle and you have a perfect quarterstaff/bo staff. And, of course, perfectly legal. Great fun to spar with them, actually. See who can push the other person the farthest, etc..

I may have gone slightly off-topic there, sorry. On to less prepared weapons.

When fighting someone always use the walls. If you're being bear-hugged, powering backwards into a wall can wind a person badly, so you can use that to your advantage. Imagine the bear-hugging attacker as a pillow between you and the wall.

<crunch>

Ooo, that's got to hurt.

Another good one is doors. I know it seems a bit IRA/Mafia-style, but slamming a door on someone can really injure them. (The wall thing can be used in 'friendly' fights, but this is a bit more serious!)

Many people these days have a variant of the mountaineering clip (more specifically a carabiner clip) as or on a keyring. They're very tough, but also may be used as knuckledusters if big enough, and (my favourite) put one onto your hand so that the smaller round end is below your little finger, make a fist, then thump someone on the arm or leg with it. Smaller point of impact leads to almost certain dead arm/leg, plus severe pain.

Nice one!

A jumping rope would be very effective, doesn't cause too much damage but the pain is considerable, use it as a whip or flail.
